Cross Country Training

The Cross Country Training Program is designed for high school runners for summer training or for open and masters fall training. The summer program provides ten weeks of training, enough to bridge that period between the end of the school year and the beginning of the racing season. You will be meeting with coaches and other athletes three times per week. We provide water, electrolyte replacement, racing uniforms, training schedule, and dynamic coaching. To get the most out of your training, you need to train smarter, not just harder. A personal coach from TEAM APEX can help you achieve your running or fitness goals with better, smarter training. Coaching excellence entails not only analyzing and planning, but communicating and listening as well. Each athlete receives feedback from their senses that is not always measurable by any other means, and communicating those sensations to the coach for discussion and interpretation is vital. Sports Massage

A P E X Sports Massage for the peak performing athlete! The therapist focuses on areas of soreness, injuries, pre-race performance, and post-race recovery. Sessions typically include joint mobility and stretching exercises as well as deep tissue therapy and trigger point therapy (depending on day of peak performance). By focusing on potential trouble spots before they might become injuries, sports massage allows for preventative maintenance for the athlete. Muscle soreness the next day or right after a race is caused by microtrauma within the muscle. Extensive or continuous strain on a muscle creates microscopic tears in the muscle and surrounding fascia. The muscle may also be tight, constricting blood flow through the muscle. This is often caused by a build-up of lactic acid, a by-product of muscle activity. Massage therapy helps restore the muscles to their original state by eliminating these metabolic by-products. Before an event, massage is used as a supplement to an athlete’s warm-up, stimulating blood flow to the muscles, reducing muscle tension, but also helps the athlete gain mental focus and relaxation before the race begins. Post-event sports massage is geared toward reducing muscle spasms that occur and enhancing the body’s own recovery process. Sports massage is also used to assist in the treatment of sports injuries by speeding the healing process of injuries. In injuries such as tendonitis, muscle sprains, and strains, massage is crucial in breaking down these scar tissues, improving blood and lymph flow to the area, in turn, flushing these harmful toxins out of the body. Having a sports massage therapist on hand before, during, and after a sports event is also beneficial to the athlete by allowing the therapist to zero in on a particular dysfunction within a particular muscle group or joint within the body. In addition to the application of massage, therapists also can perform various stretches to increase flexibility and range of motion within a joint.

Deep Tissue & Neuromuscular Therapy

A goal-oriented approach to alleviating pain and discomfort.
Deep tissue massage reveals trigger points and referral zones, includes assessment of structural alignment and musculoskeletal patterns, and manipulation of the deep tissue fibers through muscle stripping, cross fiber and stretching. (Cross fiber is a technique for powerfully stimulating the myofascial tissue and breaking up adhesions and congestion in the tissue fibers.) Focus is typically on the neck, back & hip stabilizers using a variety of techniques for working the deep tissue fibers of the muscles and connective tissue. Neuromuscular Therapy will be used to address five elements that cause pain:
1.Ischemia: Lack of blood supply to soft tissues which causes hypersensitivity to touch.
2.Trigger Points: Highly irritated points in muscles which refer pain to other parts of the body.
3.Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone.
4.Postural Distortion: Imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes.
5.Biomechanical Dysfunction: Imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, bad mechanics in a golf swing or tennis stroke, computer keyboarding).

Swedish Relaxation

Swedish massage was developed in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling. The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart with the purpose being to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.

Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.

Swedish massage techniques include: long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, and shaking motions.
